If your first line doesn’t grab people, they’ll scroll right past your whole post.
That’s just how Instagram and social media in general works. Your opening sentence has to earn their attention fast. It’s your hook, your invite, your chance to stop the scroll.
Here’s the thing… hooks don’t have to be loud or salesy to work. The best ones sound like something you’d say to a friend. Simple, honest, and totally you.
Hook template: I can’t believe I’m sharing this, but…
Example: I can’t believe I’m sharing this, but I cried after my first client call.
Why it works: This line immediately signals vulnerability, which makes people curious and more likely to connect.
Try this when you’re telling a story that feels personal, messy, or real.
Hook template: I’ve always been [one thing] but recently…
Example: I’ve always been the confident one, but lately I’ve been second-guessing everything.
Why it works: Contrasts get attention. This one sets up a shift in identity, belief, or behavior people lean in.
Try this when you’re opening up about change, growth, or self-doubt.
Hook template: Let’s be honest… [insert truth]
Example: Let’s be honest… showing up online every day is exhausting sometimes.
Why it works: The tone is casual, but it cuts straight to something real. It’s a truth-teller’s entry point.
Try this when you’re saying what others are thinking, but not saying.
Hook template: Here’s what no one tells you about [topic]
Example: Here’s what no one tells you about working for yourself: It’s lonelier than you think.
Why it works: It hints at hidden insight. People stick around when they think they’re about to learn something that most people miss.
Try this when you’re sharing behind-the-scenes thoughts, real talk, or industry wisdom.
Hook template: I wrote this for the version of me who [struggled, doubted, didn’t know]
Example: I wrote this for the version of me who thought she had to prove her worth to be chosen.
Why it works: It’s reflective, empathetic, and instantly makes the reader feel seen.
Try this when you’re writing something heartfelt, like a letter to your past self or to someone in your audience who’s in that space now.
Hook template: I almost didn’t post this, because…
Example: I almost didn’t post this, because it still feels too raw.
Why it works: This hook lowers the shield. It’s quiet and vulnerable, which makes people curious to know what’s behind the hesitation.
Try this when you’re sharing something personal, emotional, or imperfect.
Hook template: If you’ve been feeling [emotion], this is for you.
Example: If you’ve been feeling behind lately, this is for you.
Why it works: It instantly names an emotion people might not have admitted to themselves. And when they see it, they pause.
Try this when you’re offering encouragement, permission, or connection.
Hook template: 3 things I wish I knew when I started [doing something]
Example: 3 things I wish I knew when I started managing clients full-time.
Why it works: Skimmable and valuable. Plus, the “I wish I knew” angle makes it personal and trustworthy.
Try this when you’re giving advice that comes from real experience.
Hook template: Read this if you need a reminder that [insert belief or truth]
Example: Read this if you need a reminder that it’s okay to grow slowly.
Why it works: Soft but direct. It speaks to someone who’s having a quiet hard day not looking for tips, just looking to feel better.
Try this when you want to offer a gentle nudge or calming perspective.
Hook template: This made me stop and think: [insert quote, reflection, or moment]
Example: This made me stop and think: if you have to chase it, it’s probably not aligned.
Why it works: It makes your audience pause too. Hooks like this are often saved, shared, and remembered.
Try this when you’re sharing a personal insight, shift, or belief.
You don’t need to force a “hook” every time you post. But when you want your words to actually be read not just scrolled past, lead with something that sounds like you, and speaks to them.
