Why Social Media Should be the Top of Your Sales Funnel

March 8, 2023

You’ll hear the complaint everywhere that social media, and Instagram specifically, is getting more complicated than it used to be. It’s tough when you’re a small business or even a one-person entrepreneur to keep up with the complexity of actually converting on social media.

So why do it? Well, social media is the absolute best platform for the top of your sales funnel. You can’t sell your products or services if people don’t know about your products and aren’t connected to and engaged with your brand. Let’s discuss why social media is the best way to start your sales funnel, and if you feel it isn’t working for you, we have some tips for you too.

Brand Awareness

It’s hard to promote yourself when you feel like you’re yelling into a void. But, every brand starts off small, with hardly anyone aware it even exists. We’re fortunate to live in an era of social media, where we can connect with broad swathes of people quickly and develop the brand awareness that we need in order to sell. When people stumble on your brand on social media, that might be the first time they are made aware of it.

People are more likely to buy from brands they follow on a social media platform. One reason is that when they follow you, you remain top of mind. Maybe right now, your follower doesn’t need a sweater, hand-made soap, or a hair accessory. But when they do, they’ll remember your brand because they see it regularly in their feed. This is a difference-making advantage over the competition.

Low Expense

Time and money are both so precious for small and medium-sized businesses. The top of your sales funnel can easily eat up both, meaning that you have fewer resources to convert their customers later on. But social media can be comparatively inexpensive compared to other marketing options. If you want, you can even do most of the work yourself and never invest in paid ads.

If you do have a bit of money to put into social media, you can also get much more out of it. That includes working with influencers to get that human connection or investing in professional strategy (which is often cheaper than you think.)

You also can discover a powerful amount of insight from your social media campaigns for relatively cheap. Using simple social media tools like Hootsuite can get you metrics on your performance and help you perform even better.

But Social Isn’t Working for Me

You have a large social media following. Your videos get plenty of views. But it seems like your social media efforts don’t translate into sales. What’s wrong? Most likely, your funnel is broken down the line. Social media is the start of your sales funnel, but it can’t be the end. If you seem to have decent analytics when it comes to followers and views, yet you’re having trouble with conversions, it’s probably time to take a deeper look at the details of your funnel.
